That's a good question. I don't think it would be a problem for the French public. As long as .FR works and is growing, and I don't see why it should be. Some clichés, like the ones about the French always been on strike, are often overdone in the foreign media...

How would the French public and stakeholder community react to a non-French entity managing the namespace?
I remember the issues we all faced back in April '92 when we had to spend the night in EuroDisney due to strikes. Has the French public moved on?
Weird things have been going on with this auction. Moments after I published this post, the best bid had been brought back down to 150,000 Euros. Maybe someone cancelled a bid or there was a computer glitch, who knows? Since then, the price has gone back up and the current best bid is 500,000 Euros. There's still a little over a day left…

Sorry Stephan, but this is such a "French" post

I don´t see why a French Registry operator should be better than a foreign one just because it is French .

Furthermore, in Denmark Afilias is only sponsoring DotDKRegistry just like they did with DotAsia: if they are awarded the contract, Afilias will only run the technical backend, but the Registry will still be based in Denmark and they will be in charge of deciding their own policies, and that is what really matters, and what makes the real difference between the .DK, the .FR and even the .IN cases and i.e. .CC, .TV or .NU which basically sold out their TLDs and retain absolutely no control over them.

I think it is only positive that governments are finally starting to take their ccTLDs seriously and impose requirements of efficiency and reliability on Registries that have been consistently delivering below-average systems and weird policies "just because they could".
